Enligt den uråldriga kinesiska almanackan är 2011 Collegetröjans år och föregick av Oxens (2009) samt Tigerns år (2010).
Jag tror inte på astrologi och är dessutom en smula osäker på hur noggrann och tillförlitlig min research av den kinesiska kalendern egentligen har varit.
Men rent sartoriellt – ett ord vi väl vid det här laget har införlivat i svenska språket? – insåg jag häromdagen när jag skulle packa resväskan för en liten weekendtur till Penzance att jag har köpt fler collegetröjor under det gångna året än jag har gjort sammanlagt under hela mitt liv.
I musik- och filmvärlden sammanfattar man som kritiker alltid på ett eller annat sätt det gångna årets favoriter och rangordnar produkter och upplevelser. I modejournalistiken gör man det mycket mer sällan, i alla fall aldrig lika specifikt. Årets visningar och trender, visst, men en regelrätt och detaljerad lista över årets plagg är ingen modejournalistisk självklarhet.
Så låt mig här och nu publicera just en sådan och för övrigt alldeles sanningsenlig dylik.
Årets plagg 2011:
- Gråmelerad collegetröja från Buzz Rickson (utan tryck).
- Marinblå collegetröja från Ralph Laurens RRL-kollektion (med tryck; ett indianmotiv samt texten 93rd Division).
- Gråmelerad collegetröja från Buzz Rickson (med tryck; Air Force Base, Maxwell, Alabama).
- Collegetröja i en lätt synskadad röd nyans från Levi's Vintage Clothing (utan tryck).
- Gråmelerad collegetröja från Supreme (med luva och tryck: tidningen The New Yorkers logotyp).
Vad vi med bara en snabb blick kan utläsa av den här sammanställningen är att collegetröjan relativt tydligt dominerar den här årslistan.
Och detta är ändå bara de fem bästa nya collegetröjorna jag har burit under 2011. Under topp fem bubblar några till som inte riktigt lyckades skänka mig samma perfekta k-änsla av modernitet eller bekvämlighet. Även om en gråmelerad collegetröja från tyska Pike Brothers borde ha kvalat in på en delad femte plats.
Men den intressanta frågan är egentligen inte vilka collegetröjor jag tycker mest om – utan varför just collegetröjan? Och varför just nu?
Jag tror att det är enkelt att se hur den är en del av både en (nästan motvillig) fortsättning på och reaktion mot de senaste årens ivy leagueism och vår så oövergående fäbless för allt som kan kategoriseras under rubriken heritage – arkivmode på svenska.
Collegetröjan lyckas uppnå väldigt många olika effekter beroende på kontexten den bärs i. Den är perfekt om man vill signalera ett anti-mode, ett "äh, jag bryr mig inte". Den kan, i undantagsfall, fortfarande också säga "Jag pysslar med något slags idrott". Men mest av allt, och det här tror jag är nyckeln till dess dominans i min egen garderob, är den ett medvetet steg bort från uppklätt och spänt. Collegetröjan är ett av våra allra mest avslappnade plagg. Och är det något som är modernt så är det just det: avslappnat.
Men jag kan inte nog understryka hur många stela och spända timmar av samtal och teorier om mode det tog att komma fram till just det.
